Better energy gain of solar cells

Researchers of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) have found a way to increase the efficiency border of their silicon solar cells.

Because of their physical nature, the theoretical efficiency border is at 29.3 percent. According to the researchers this maximal theoretical border can be increased up to 40 percent – with the help of built-in organic layers in the solar cells.

This increase of energy gain would be a significant milestone for photovoltaics (pv) because they would be able to produce massively more electricity.

In combination with an energy storage, a pv-system will probably produce power cheaper than average off the power grid. Local, central producers will lose ground because of this, while the decentralized energy production increases.
